What MERV 8 filters out and how it maps to Filtrete MPR and Home Depot FPR.
MERV 8 on the ASHRAE 52.2 scale captures pollen, dust mite debris, sanding dust, spray-paint dust and textile fibres down to about 3 microns.
In the two proprietary retail scales, MERV 8 lines up with Filtrete MPR 600 and MPR 1000 (marketed as its Dust and Pollen / Clean Living tiers) and Home Depot FPR 5. The conversions are approximate because each scale tests differently, so treat them as bands, not exact equals.
It is the baseline choice for protecting the furnace blower and coil in a home with no specific allergy need. A higher MERV resists airflow more, so confirm the blower can pull through it before jumping several steps.
